The British arrived on the island in 1650 from nearby colonies and founded European villages for the first time. The marriage was doomed to fail as petition to the government led to rebellion and eventually recognition, in 1980, as independent British Colony.

Today Anguilla’s friendly people, composed primarily of African ancestry, officially speak English. A stroll down island roads will likely find, however, many natives speaking Anguilla’s own Creole variation. Visitors may occasionally hear other Latin or Asian inspired tongues from cheerful visitors and immigrants.
