Your Anguilla Trip

If you know you’re interested in traveling to the Caribbean Islands, you have various choices for your final destination. You can try a fun cruise throughout the islands to visit all the best hot spots, or you can fly directly to one of the many wonderful islands found in this region of the world. One of the islands from which you can choose is Anguilla.

A Few Fun Facts and Tips before your next Anguilla Trip

An Anguilla trip may not be the most popular island vacation when speaking of Caribbean travel sites, but for that reason, it is great if you are looking for a more private Caribbean getaway, without many other tourists. Anguilla is a British overseas territory and is the most northern of the Leeward Islands. Anguilla is comprised of one larger island, including the capital city of The Valley, and includes a few tiny islands and cays, most of which are privately owned or uninhabited. Some of the other smaller islands that are part of the Anguilla chain include Dog Island, the Prickly Pear Cays, Scrub Island, Seal Island, and Sombrero, or Hat Island.

The climate on Anguilla is what you would expect to find in this tropical region of the world. The island does get northeastern trade winds, so it is dry compared to other tropical islands, with the most rain coming in September and October. When considering an Anguilla trip, remember that it is also along the path of some hurricanes in the summer and fall.

An Anguilla trip would not be complete without spending some time in the beautiful Caribbean water. Anguilla is known for its coral reef, which is home to various sea animals and plants. The land itself is mostly sandy and not good for farming industries. However, the waters along the coast are great for fishing, so if you enjoy that sport, you may be interested in applying for a fishing license and talking to some fishing outfitters in Anguilla when planning your Caribbean travel.

As with most Caribbean islands, if you want to travel to Anguilla, you need the proper paperwork. Before you leave, apply for a passport, and it is important to be able to show either a return plane ticket or a ticket to otherwise leave the island at some point. Make your hotel reservations at least a few months in advance to find the best deals and visit our Top Anguilla Resorts page for a leg up on your next Anguilla trip.

Location and Size

Anguilla is a small but beautiful Caribbean island nestled among the northern Lesser Antilles also known as the Leeward Islands. Its southern neighbor, Saint Martin, sits across the Anguilla Channel just a twenty minute ferry ride away. The island’s terrain consists of many beaches, sand dunes, caves, coral and limestone banks that are mostly level with no significant rise in elevation. At a maximum of three miles in width, the thirty five square mile island stretches out for sixteen miles across the warm Caribbean sun. Stunted trees, low-level brush, and small ponds dot Anguilla’s landscape.

Weather

Anguilla’s climate is a mark of consistency. Warm temperatures average eighty degrees Fahrenheit in winter to eighty six degrees Fahrenheit in summer. As with most Caribbean islands, Anguilla is susceptible to storms during hurricane season from June to November.

History and People

Anguilla was most likely first colonized by descendents of early seafaring South American Arawak speaking voyagers. Subsequently the Carib people occupied Anguilla and named the island Malliouhana, an obvious reference to the elongated eel like perimeter of the island. Likewise Anguilla’s name today, derived from Latin, refers to the same coral lying predator.

The British arrived on the island in 1650 from nearby colonies and founded European villages for the first time. Management of Anguilla from Britain eventually gave in to the 1882 union of Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis. The marriage was doomed to fail as petition to the government led to rebellion and eventually recognition, in 1980, as independent British Colony.

Today Anguilla’s friendly people, composed primarily of African ancestry, officially speak English. A stroll down island roads will likely find, however, many natives speaking Anguilla’s own Creole variation. Visitors may occasionally hear other Latin or Asian inspired tongues from cheerful visitors and immigrants.

Anguilla’s graceful Architecture is reminiscent of Mediterranean and Moroccan facades. Some have likened Anguilla’s beautiful coastline to Côte d’Azur or the Ligurian Riviera. The island is also tech friendly and savvy. Almost all of Anguilla’s resorts, hotels, and restaurants feature a web presence, with plenty of photographs, maps, menus and additional helpful data.

Getting There

Planning a vacation or visit to the beautiful Caribbean island of Anguilla? Getting there might be easier than you think. Modern air travel to Anguilla is easy, comfortable and hassle free. Many airlines including Virgin Atlantic, US Airways, KLM, Continental Airlines, and Air Canada fly into Anguilla’s neighboring islands where connections to Anguilla’s Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (airport code AXA) are conveniently made. Day-after-day this small but quaint airport and its cordial staff welcome direct flights from San Juan, Antigua, St. Thomas and other Caribbean islands. Alternatively, Anguilla is also easily accessible by means of a quick ferry ride from nearby Saint Martin. Whether by air or sea, visitors can be assured upon arrival of a warm Anguillan reception and friendly island hospitality.

Beaches

Anguilla possesses thirty three stunning beaches, each offering a slightly different experience. These scenic shorelines extend vacationers peaceful, memorable surroundings to either sunbathe by or enjoy a refreshing swim in. Savannah Bay’s secluded beach, for example, hides a great beach bar and excellent conditions for boogie boarding. Visitors seeking to take part in more hands-on activities are likely better suited for Rendezvous Bay or Shoal Bay. These hot spots provide more than a land mile of beach and an assortment of aquatic sport playgrounds, including kite surfing, sailing and sea kayaking.

Diving

For those water lovers, Anguilla’s crystal clear Caribbean waters are ideal for snorkel diving throughout the numerous precious coral reefs. Also, scattered across the island are several aquatic parks, a handful of shipwrecks, dive canyons and burrows that are sure to please either seasoned or beginner divers. In all likelihood the most celebrated of these sites would be the protected El Buen Consejo Underwater Archaeological Preserve. The long ago sunken ship boasts priceless treasures that include cannons, cannonballs, anchors, and even gold coins.

Dining and Shopping

Anguilla provides a special ambience for dining. The Malliouhana Restaurant serves up top-notch fine dining with an incredible selection of wines. Looking for something more casual? Try a freshly caught lobster at one of the many beach bars or even a great roadside barbecue. Conveniently located, numerous restaurants and beachside grills are set close to the Anguilla’s luxurious hotels. Shopping is limited in Anguilla. As luck would have it, a twenty minute ferry ride across the Anguillan Channel is St. Martin, a shopper’s paradise.

A true jewel of the Caribbean, Anguilla is sure to shower its guests with exquisite backdrops, fantastic amenities, comfort and serenity
